Introduction

The upcoming Labor Day holiday is a good time for people to celebrate the oncoming end of summer with family & friends even for those who may already be retired from the labor force.

Here we have a focus on  crafts suitable for those with hand dexterity or strength issues that can act as a family friendly fun pass-time and which can later double as indoor or outdoor decor for Labor Day parties.

Main skills necessary in the following tutorials include painting, gluing, and cutting cloth, paper, and foam. Assistance or preparation in advance may be required for those with more extreme hand issues who may have trouble cutting thicker materials.

See our Crafting Tools for Seniors article for suitable craft supplies for those with arthritis or hand & finger flexibility issues.

Gifts for Caregiving Gift Baskets

Introduction

Caregiving can be a exhausting, stress-filled and seemingly thankless task when it comes to bearing the burden of being in charge of someone else's well being. For that reason personalized caregiving gift baskets are a popular choice when it comes time to give a gift to a caretaker for their birthday, other holiday, or just as an expression of thanks for all that they do.

As opposed to large single gifts, a gift basket can be filled with many different objects that can be personalized to an individual's taste, that can be used in various different situations, that can cover a wider range of both necessities and  non-essential fun items, and yet still remain on the relatively inexpensive side.

Besides items that are explicitly related to caregiving, small objects for self care & stress relief tend to be particularly well received when it comes to gift baskets. Some further suggestions include...

Books as Gifts Picture
Books & Magazines
  • Small paperback books & magazines can provide hours of entertainment & information for a relatively inexpensive cost. These can be novels or non-fiction books & magazines in the favorite genres or otherwise covering particular topics of interest for the caregiver. Caregiving support books & magazine issues such as Caregiver's Survival Handbook & Chicken Soup for the Soup for Family Caregivers are also recommended.

Part 2 : iOS Exclusive
Part 3 : Android Exclusive

Introduction

Mindfulness is a catch-all term for a mental state of focus, calmness, and acceptance that is often used as therapeutic technique for stress relief, pain management, insomnia and a variety of other health concerns. Techniques used to cultivate mindfulness include meditation, breathing exercises, focused activities such as yoga, and short pauses to stop during your daily life to focus & center oneself.

Many people find it easier to begin & maintain mindfulness routines by using specifically tailored apps on their often ever present cell phones. These apps are an easy & portable way to remain connected with others in the mindfulness community, relax with guided mediations & calming music or ambient sounds, as well as act as reminders to pause & take a quick breather for oneself during the day.

Here are a selection of cross-platform apps for both Android & iOS that specifically focus on mindfulness and meditation. They are fully free or free to try, many with further premium content that can be later unlocked through subscription services.
